  • 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race – 29 December – Giacomo crowned race winner

Jim Delegat’s Giacomo is confirmed as the overall winner of the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Giacomo, a 70-ft yacht from New Zealand, becomes the first overseas yacht to win the race since 2007. Victory is reward for an excellent and consistent race and is a triumph of persistence. Two years ago, Giacomo was forced to retire from the Rolex Sydney Hobart after she dismasted off the Tasmanian coast. After a year rebuilding the boat, the crew returned for the 72nd edition of the race determined to make amends for that disappointment. After finishing just under two hours behind line honours winner Perpetual LOYAL, and registering the second fastest time in the race’s history, overall victory was confirmed when the pursuing yachts hit fickle conditions in Storm Bay and along the Derwent...

Apparently they go to the toilet where they sleep… We go and checkout some giant tortoises, which were just the most incredible creatures. We dive Kicker Rock, which was quite deep but well worth the effort. Unfortunately the vis was quite bad down there due to the currents so we couldn’t capture to much on camera. Riley saw his first hammerhead shark down there! Meet Nicole and Joel, my friends I met a few years ago overseas. I also slept on Nicoles front lawn in Torquay when I travelled Australia in my van. In addition to Navionics, it's good to use Google Earth or Google Maps too (you can download areas offline for free) when you're sailing in an area with lots of reefs, just to be sure. 2. Of course, whatever the official rule for boat traffic is, you must avoid hitting the other boat :) 3. Navigation rule 4: The Wale: when sailing in the night, most motor boats (except a few exceptions mentioned in the navigation rules book) still have to avoid you (they see on the lights a sailboat has that you are sailing). Some people like doing it, others not so much, but being able to sail a yacht on your own is an important skill to have. This is a short film that we shot at the end of the year, on a gloomy day, that gives you some idea of the way we go about it. Please let us know what you think below and if you have any observations or hints and tips of your own we would love to hear them

The seals in the Galapagos had quickly claimed La Vagabonde as their new home. Initially, they were ‘cute’, but after a few days they became stinky (they stunk to begin with, but everyone has their flaws) and very unwelcome onboard!! Cheers Nicole, you da bomb. Stay tuned for part 2 of the Galapagos :) I hope you all enjoyed this episode. The two brothers are visiting the International Boat Show in Cape Town, but before doing so they buy maritime outfits in order to fit in perfectly and get the best service possible. At the boat show the guys pretend to be in the market for a yacht and get the royal treatment from the folks at Beneteau. Later they bump into a couple of hot girls on the dock and chat them up. The four agree to meet up at a local bar later in the evening. The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is a true test of human and machine. Organized by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in collaboration with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, this 628 nautical mile offshore race requires meticulous preparation, honed skills and resolute determination just to finish. Securing the Tattersall Cup and coveted Rolex timepiece awarded to the overall winner requires all those values and more. The 2017 race marks the 73rd edition of this time-honoured tradition. And, with over 100 yachts, including 30 overseas entries, expected to cross the start line at 13:00 AEDT on 26 December 2016, everything is in place for another exceptional chapter in the history of this classic race.

Our new Southerly 480 sailboat came out of the mould at the Discovery Yachts Shipyard in the UK last week and we were there to document it! In this latest update we show you the laying-up process for the hull of Distant Shores III, show the hull coming out of the mould, check out the unique swing keel and take a look at the “plug” for the new pilothouse cabin top. (A plug is a mock-up from which the final mould will be made.) We’ve been working with the design team on this new model of Southerly Yacht, the first one to be built by Discovery Yachts Group. We’re excited to show you the build process of this new boat! It is the third Southerly Yacht we’ve owned. We’re definitely fans! I will TEACH you HOW TO SAIL in 20 minutes from LEAVING the DOCK to ANCHORING in the new location. I had SO MANY QUESTIONS when I started sailing and had a difficult time finding all the answers. I hope this video will answer most of yours too! Addings: 1. Not sure? Call the ship on channel 16 :) This is my biggest project I've ever done. And I hope you like it!
